How Are Gunite Pools Installed?

A backyard swimming pool can give you a cool place to relax in the summer. There's no need to go elsewhere when you can go for a swim in the privacy of your own property. Pools can be constructed from a number of materials, but gunite has many advantages. Gunite is a type of concrete that is applied with a nozzle in the desired location. It's a great material for pools because it creates a smoother surface than other types of concrete. It can be used as a substitute for fiberglass. Here's what you can expect when you hire gunite pool builders to install your new swimming pool:

1. Planning

Before any changes are made to your property, some preliminary planning must take place. Your builders will first consult with local utility companies to make sure there are no electrical lines, sewage lines, or water lines running under your backyard. Once they're sure it's safe to proceed, your builders will measure the area where you want your pool constructed. Based on the space available and your ideal design, they will draw up a blueprint for your new pool.

2. Excavation

In-ground pools are ideal for many people. Unlike above ground pools, they take up no vertical space. This can be important for homeowners who are concerned with preserving their view of the yard. In-ground pools require digging. Since pools are usually three to six feet deep, a large volume of dirt must be removed. Your pool builders will use excavators and other power tools to dig efficiently.

3. Framework Building

Once your builders have made a hole of the appropriate size, they will begin creating a framework for your pool. This framework is made of rebar and wire, and it's used to ensure that your pool is the correct shape and size. The rebar framework will give your gunite something to stick to. You can think of the framework as a foundation for your pool. Once your pool is completed, the framework will be completely hidden.

4. Gunite Application

After the underlying framework is in place, the gunite application can begin. Your pool builders will mix gunite from cement, sand, and other small rocks. Next, it will be applied using a nozzle that mixes the dry gunite powder with water as it sprays. Gunite does not need to be compacted by hand since the high velocity application performs this task automatically.
